C295 Planning Update

January 7th, 2008

The architect study for C295 has been received and is ready for Committee review and approval. The Committee may view the documents in my office.

Lennie Chamberlin and I met Friday to formulate a game plan for the Renovation of C295. The next item needed after your approval to push this forward is a set of Construction Documents completed by an architect for Purchasing. The architect has provided some drawings and documents, but a few more are needed. Lennie will contact the architects for the cost and timing of such documents. A list of “to do’s” have been generated for both Lennie and myself to make this project happen in the Summer of 2008. We have a ballpark projected budget of approximately $217,500 at this point. It is our intent to lay out our plan to Purchasing to help avoid any pitfalls.

Classroom Renovation Project Update

February 20th, 2007

Executive Summary

The Classroom Renovation Committee is pleased to report on the classroom updates at Eastfield College.  Over forty classrooms have been renovated in some manner thus far with more dramatic renovations to follow in the larger classrooms. C297 and C335 are scheduled for new furniture and carpet over Spring Break, and C295 is schedule for full renovation this summer.  .

Classrooms are updated through the combined cooperation of many areas of the college.  Instructional divisions, Administration, Facilities, Media, IT, student, and faculty recommendations are taken into consideration throughout the process as updates are planned.  New AV technologies are introduced with proper training sessions.  Several AV technologies have been placed in classrooms for the faculty to “kick the tires” before committing.  Feedback is sought and analyzed for future use.  Faculty input has been sought and used to create the design for several classroom projects.

The Classroom Renovation Committee Blog was created for communication with Eastfield faculty, administration, staff, students and interested community members.  It is regularly updated with the latest information on classrooms.  Valid comments are reviewed and published when received.

The project is taking focus and results are being reviewed and enjoyed by the faculty and students that use the facility.  Funding is being watched closely as renovation progresses as funding is the major limitation of the overall project.

The Committee is pleased to be a driving force in the daily life of Eastfield College.

Progress Update as of February, 2007:

Large classrooms (C295, C297, C331 and C335):
These classrooms have been scrutinized for new furniture and carpeting.  The Lab Sinks in C295, C331 and C335 were removed over the Christmas break.  The flooring and carpeting has been patched in C335 and C295, and the carpeting in C331 replaced.  Completion of these items in C297 and C335 will provide the foundation of new carpeting and furniture in these classrooms at Spring Break.

C297 and C335 were originally scheduled to have new furniture and carpeting replaced over the Christmas break, but District Purchasing required time to renegotiate the large furniture tiered pricing contract, so this has been tentatively been rescheduled for Spring Break Week.  District Purchasing required a procedure document describing the process of furniture vendor selection for the above classrooms.  This document was created and approved by District Purchasing.

Budget estimates are included for C297 and C335 furniture and carpeting.  New furniture will be used in these two classrooms at an estimated cost of $105,000, plus $32,500 carpet installation for the rooms. The furniture proposed in C297 will be a combination of fixed floor seating and adjustable tables and chairs that will allow some flexibility to the students in this LGI classroom for the first time.  These are scheduled for renovation during Spring Break Week (March 11 – 16).

A Service Assistance Request (SAR) has been written as required for District involvement with the remodeling of C295.  This is scheduled for the summer of 2007.  The SAR describes the proposed modifications to the classroom and is attached for your perusal.  The costs may be higher than first thought as consultants may be contracted by the District for design and development of the classroom.  Since estimates may run high for this classroom, other classrooms will be placed on hold so the committee will know how much money is available for additional classrooms.

N219 and N220 have been upgraded with the following items:

The rooms have been painted and carpeted.

The furniture was basically new in the classrooms.

New Professor’s Workstations have been placed in the classrooms.

New ceiling tiles have been installed.New whiteboards have been installed.

New projection screens and projectors, along with supporting audio visual equipment, have been installed.

New controllers and sound reinforcement systems have been ordered for these classrooms and will be installed upon arrival.

New Access Locks requiring card access have been installed on the doors.

C268, C278 and C275 upgrades:
The rooms have been painted and carpeted.

New furniture was ordered and installed in the classrooms according to the design of the classrooms as designed by the faculty that use the classrooms.

New Professor’s Workstations have been placed in the classrooms.

New ceiling tiles have been installed.New whiteboards have been installed.

New projection screens and projectors, along with supporting audio visual equipment, have been installed.

New DVD/VCR’s have been installed in these classrooms.

Other classroom updates:
New whiteboards have been, and are being placed into many classrooms at this time.

Recent board placements are C295, C203, C205, L304B and L313A.

Whiteboards are now being installed in C331 (due to changing the orientation of the seating).

Painting and patching will follow removal/installation of the whiteboards.

Previously, C268, C278, C275, C261, and C335 were changed.

New access locks have been installed on the following classrooms:C115, F208, L108, M206, S200, T152, T153, C203, C205, C262, F216, L302, S201,C268, F218, L303, N108, S202, C275, F219, L304A, N219, S202A, C278, F219C, L308A/B, N220, S204, C350 (Electro-micro.lab),  L311A, N221,  S206, N224

Other locks were used to change out older card readers, i.e. on the Business Office, division offices, chemistry storage, mailroom, etc. The carpet has been changed in C275, C268, C331, N219, and N220 along with the ceiling tiles in N219 and N220. Audio visual equipment including projection screens, new projectors, document cameras, professor workstations, Smart Sympodiums, room controllers, DVD/VCR’s, with new associated mounting devices have been distributed and installed as outlined in the attached documents.

Room control units have been installed in C203, C205, C278, N219, and N220.

The media distribution crew has offered quick training sessions on how to use the new room control systems.  Email was sent to faculty with spring room bookings in these rooms with approximately 20 responses.  Two vendors completed room integration of existing and new equipment for easier access and switching between devices.    The Committee is very interested in gathering faculty feedback this spring before commitment of future funding for room control installations.  One recurring theme is the inability to see the instructor from all student desks.  Also, the light from the projector glaring at the professor from the workstation is something that may be adjusted with furniture shifts.   Recent feedback at the beginning of the semester indicates positive feedback in classrooms with room controls.  Elimination of multiple remotes simplifies daily usage.  Sixteen training sessions were offered during the first week of class.

New instructor workstations assigned to the following classrooms: C142, C305, C312, N219, N220, C278, C275, C268, L304B.  Additional new workstations have been assigned to these classrooms: C324, C331, F201, C295, N216, N235, C261, C278, C280, C281, C291, C293, L302, L305, L306, L311, N236, C295, and N237.

Five additional Spectrum Industry TIC Workstations are to be assigned when assembled and prepared for installation.  Feedback will also be gathered on these workstations.  The smaller footprint custom carts were not delivered in this round.  Some of the smaller classrooms will need replacements when these smaller units arrive.

Visual Presenters (document cameras) have been deployed to the following rooms based on faculty needs:  C305, C312, C320, C321, C331, N219, N220, N235, S307, T112, T115, T157, and one circulating unit in MPS.  C203 and C205 also have units installed from PO 113011.

Additional rooms have other models of the Elmo document camera installed from other sources: C291, C295, C300, L100, circulating units (5), S100, S201, S315, and T115/114.

Sympodiums are assigned to C203, C205, and C295.  One additional unit will be assigned this spring.

New computers are allocated as needed for these classrooms.

New ceiling tiles are identified and ordered as necessary. Full budgets of spending are available for your perusal.
