ADA

While any new construction will adhere to ADA guidelines, hopefully we will be able to follow the intent of the regulations as opposed to the measurements in the regulations.  Often while areas such as restrooms and building entrances comply with specifications outlined by ADA, they are still not ‘user friendly’.  A restroom may be easily accessible for a person in a wheelchair but difficult to maneuver in a scooter.  A Univeral Design concept allowing easy access for all users as opposed to ‘accessible entrances’ or ‘accessible restrooms’ is key.  A person in a wheelchair, a mother with a stroller, or an employee with an armful of books and briefcases all need a door that does not require an extra hand to open or a button to push.  A design that is easily accessed by students with disabilities is easily accessed by all students.

Projection screen pre-installation during construction

Draper Inc., a screen manufacturer, screen case can be installed during the building construction phase.  The screen is installed by MPS staff when the building is released to campus.  This will eliminate damage to the screen fabric. This means we have to know the front orientation of the rooms.

Media & Production Services Considerations
June, 2006

Essentials:
Review draft, update, and collect Multimedia Learning Space Technology Needs Assessment form for all spaces in each building.Review draft, update and approve Learning Space Technology Matrix.  Check against district Smartroom standards.

What is our definition of a flexible space regarding learning spaces? At what point do we bring in an AV vendor to work with the architect and construction teams?  Is there a district process?  In the Science building experience, the AV vendor, requisitions, equipment lists, installation occurred after the building was up. MPS staff needs to research Walltalkers concept of projection areas that serve two functions:  projection and writing surfaces

MPS staff needs to research Walltalkers concept of projection areas that serve two functions:  projection and writing surfacesRemote management system of projectors via IP for Pleasant Grove and Garland campuses and the new Building will enable MPS staff to operate all functions of the projector on the remote control and check lamp life status, etc. from L112, the MPS suite.

Concern: the request for cell phone blocking device in learning spaces may deter student presentation projects in future now that phones carry downloads, files, photos, sound clips, etc.

Learning spaces:  Light switches at both the front and back (within reach of the instructor workstation)

AV Storage –Sound system component room in multi-purpose – conference rooms must have a separate entry from the furniture/custodial storage.  Current problems in the Science building are access, furniture blocking media staff from using the sound system and setting up equipment.

Soundproofing will be essential for learning spaces and in particular, the multi-purpose rooms.

Do we want Digital cable television at the two campuses?

Instructional materials

Space for collection, distribution, check out, receiving and return via intercampus loan system for Pleasant Grove and Garland campuses

Storage for Pleasant Grove and Garland campuses:  Conference and presentation materials storage area required to house distribution and instructional materials and equipment.  Examples of items needed for storage/use:

            Flip charts                                                        Gaffer’s tape

            Paper flipchart pads                                          Ladders

            Markers                                                           Security cables

Projection lamps                                             Extension and multi outlets cords

Closed caption unit                                         Tools for maintenance, repair

            Batteries

Assorted cables and adapters                 AV carts

            Podium                                                 Amplified portable system

Speakers                                              Walkie talkie radios or cell phone

Microphones: wired; wireless handheld and lapel

            Digital camcorders for checkout

            Blank media (video, DVD-R)

Instructional materials collection for programs intended for this facility

Shelving and cabinets for instructional materials and supplies

            Workstation / desk

Phone and network access to main campus for resources, assistance,

communication, media collection titles access to library system

Computer workstation (admin network) and printer

Cleaning supplies, solvents, related MSDS information; first aid kit; flashlights

Staffing needs to be determined.

Other considerations:
ADA equipment such as sight impaired viewers (CCTV units)

needs to be determined.ADA equipment such as sight impaired viewers (CCTV units)Access to loading dock for delivery of big ticket equipment for special functions

Will district’s daily intercampus mail van delivery service facility?  How often?  Daily?

Wireless Networking

One of the major functions of the building should be the capability to provide wireless connectivity to network devices.  Wireless access points, such as the Cisco 1230, strategically placed will provide complete coverage Wirelessof the building.
