  3. What the design of learning spaces will be like in addressing the input received in the September 11 sessions.

Everyone is invited to be present to hear the presentation and to enter into any further discussion, and question and answers about this significant structure that will help direct the future of EFC as a learning college.

More Information On Learning Communities

September 6th, 2006

Some have asked, “What is the Learning Community/Learning Spaces Concept?” The session scheduled for this Thursday, September 7, 1:00 pm is to begin the information sharing on the Learning Community concept. This meeting will be in S101, (it was previously announced as meeting in C135) and will be directed by Ed Roy from Steelcase’s Higher Education Division. The purpose of this special session is to present information on the Learning Community philosophy. You need to be present for this presentation. Questions and answers will follow.

Time Schedule For Visits With Terry Hajduk

September 6th, 2006

Monday, September 11 in H100
Wednesday, September 13 in C295

Meetings with our consultant architect for the Learning Community building, Terry Hajduk, are being arranged for Monday, September 11. These meetings will be scheduled in 30 minute slots. We will accommodate as many as possible. We especially want those who are thinking about becoming an active part of the new learn community (learning spaces) concept to be present to talk with Terry. This would involve not only the faculty, but also support staff, PSS personnel who work most closely with the faculty utilizing the new learning community philosophy, and the Division Deans.

Here is a PDF file identifying 10 questions for you to consider before coming to the Monday, September 11 meeting. In fact you need to look over these questions before the meeting on Thursday, September 7, described in the next entry.

Call either Lindle Grigsby (7199) or Ann Ross (7198) and reserve a time for your meeting with Terry Hajduk. If you do not register as a team we may have to place two or three others with you for the discussion so we can accommodate as many as possible.

Action notes regarding Learning Spaces July 21

August 9th, 2006

Learning Spaces Architect

HKS signed contract should be back from Purchasing by the first of next week and then HKS will receive a notice to proceed.  HKS is scheduled next week to review Facilities Services documents for background information.  HKS’s first meeting at the campus is tentatively scheduled for the week of August 7.

Susan Hansen distributed a program status report (See Attachment #1.)  Final programming decisions are needed by the end of August (or at least for the Child Development Center.)   Lindle noted that Bill Middleton is no longer a contact person; all contacts should be made directly with Susan Hansen.

To prepare a site plan and recommend where to put the Learning Spaces Building, HKS will consider the needs of the PCSC, needs of T Building and Workforce Development, utility locations and traffic flow.

Lindle noted that it is important to review all resources on what learning spaces are through the resources shared so far or via other resources before Terry Hajduk meets with us.  Meetings with faculty will begin during reporting week.

Lindle and Carol will develop a timeline for decisions.

Action notes for July 21 Construction meeting

August 9th, 2006

•    Report from Functional Team

Jack explained the construction communication website and its components. The District website (bond program) will link to Eastfield construction information.  The site will also include emergency services and building management information.   A suggestion was made for the construction link to be a major subtitle under “Eastfield News”.   Jack demonstrated the mechanics of sending in comments and future work to be done.  Sharon commended Jack, Glenn and John for the hard work.

•    Child Development Center

Richard distributed a document detailing recommended needs for an Education Building (See Attachment #2)   He explained the feasibility of putting the Teacher Ed program with the child care program.  The teacher prep programs trains teachers through middle school. The current program has 1500 students and a good, viable program with an active partnership with TAMU Commerce.

•    T Building

Gerald gave an overview of the issues:

>Have lost flexibility to have true labs in certain disciplines

>Overcrowded which presents safety concerns

>Welding is overcrowded and needs expanding.

>Need to expand and support the 3-year Hot Rod College initiative.

>Want to tag onto the CE idea of building open space for future needs.

>Need more space for faculty.

>Believe that WF Development Building should be part of or adjacent to T-Building to enhance proximity for training.

>If buildings were located together, it would increase efficiency due to staff sharing.

Backfill/Redesign

•    Fine Arts Building

Don talked about redesign of the Fine Arts area including moving the child care center, remodeling and/or possibly moving the Bookstore, redoing the ceramics area and redesign the bookstore dock into a kiln area.   If possible the area between S & C would be converted into a sculpture garden.

It is unclear whether welding art could be incorporated into the Art area.   It would require consultation with the fire marshal on safety issues.

It is hoped that HKS’s site plan will include changing how deliveries are made to Subway.

•    Bookstore

Jim noted that the bookstore has storage problems and need more space.  When the ceramics area moves, some of that space could be taken in for the Bookstore.  The18-wheelers delivering to the Bookstore are a real safety problem.

•    Police Department

Consideration is being given to relocating the Police Department to N Building. Doing so would provide a holding room and accessible restrooms not shared with the public.  More research and drawings are needed.

•    Testing Center

Assessment Center had indicated a need for more space.  Reva requested that the Testing Center expansion include space for isolated testing.  Gerald also requested that testing services previously eliminated (entire class testing) due to space be restore. Allatia noted that it could enhance learning for student to have the flexibility as to when they take their tests.

•    C-135 Airflow Correction

Lindle added this as a need for correction in this room and others where airflow and noise are a problem.  It was noted that this could be maintenance and care should be taken not to mix this work with construction.

•    Journalism

Gerald expressed a need to revamp the journalism program along with their space which has long been inadequate. They need to get into web-based programming.  He had hoped to marry the journalism, digital imaging and computer aided design, but they are not all in the same area.   It was felt that this trio of programs could be housed in the Learning Spaces Building.

•    Jerry Henson on behalf of the Classroom Renovation committee presented concept drawings for renovation of C295 and C-297 (See Attachment #3).

Parking Construction/Rework
>Perimeter drive near Oates needs extensive work and  assessment by HKS.

>Funds for replacement parking are part of the bond package.

># of students taking online courses will affect parking needs.

Round Robin

>Jack noted the number of unattended children in hallways while their parents are in class.  Could an area be provided for the children?   Lindle noted that CE should explore a class.  John noted previous discussions on this subject and the issues of security, liability, etc.

>John noted that Jerry Henson will join the meeting to explain the preliminary concept for renovation of C-295 and C-297. Actual work will take place next summer.

>Don asked if a definite decision had been made for space and staffing for the education centers.   Sharon stated that a preliminary plan had been developed and she would share it.

>Jim noted that he needs costs associated with the centers.  He will email a template to be completed and returned to him.

>Emma shared her work on the District Community Learning Resource Services committee.  She noted that the St. Louis facility is under a different accrediting region.  Her team will look at what needs to be in the centers to meet SACS requirements.

Attending: Lindle Grigsby, Jim Jones, Michael Washington, Emma Cronin, Gerald Kozlowski, Bruce Anderson, Jack Thiehoff, Lucinda Gonzales, John Criswell, Esther Bueno, Sharon Cook Richard Cinclair, Don Baynham, Susan Hansen, Art Sykes, Allatia Harris, Brenda Stevenson, and Jerry Henson
